The "Maria Malibran" International Opera Competition is named after Maria Malibran, one of the greatest singers of all time from the 19th century, a master interpreter of great works by the greatest Italian composers. The competition was born in 2011 with the aim of enhancing and rewarding the best talents of opera singing.
Over the years the competition has taken place in prestigious venues such as the Palazzina Liberty in Milan (2015, the year of Expo), the Villa Forno at the University of Milan-Bicocca (2016), and the Casa Verdi -- retirement home for musicians (2017).
The commission of judges are made up of renowned artistic directors, conductors, and agents, both national and international. Starting 2020, our association ACITKO's Honorary President and Grammy Award-winning South Korean lyric coloratura soprano Sumi Jo will join us as a judge.
Each year opera singers from all around the globe participate in the competition, many of whom go on to start brilliant and notable opera careers after winning the competition.
This year's competition is open to opera singers of all nationalities under 36 years of age (at the time of the competition). Please see "Rules" below for complete rules and regulations.
